Weather Stream Awarded Phase A Study Contract from NASA to Develop Radiometer Payload for International Atmosphere Observing System Mission

Boulder, Colorado – Weather Stream, a leader in atmospheric observation and microwave sounder technology, is thrilled to announce its contract award to support NASA’s Atmosphere Observing System (AOS) mission. This exciting collaboration marks a significant milestone in Weather Stream’s commitment to advancing the understanding of Earth’s atmosphere and enhancing climate prediction capabilities.

The AOS mission aims to unravel the complexities of aerosol and cloud interactions and their impact on climate, weather patterns, and air quality. A millimeter and submillimeter radiometer payload will play a crucial role in this mission, providing precise measurements of atmospheric particles and radiative forcing.

Weather Stream’s Advanced Microwave Sounder Technology

At the core of Weather Stream’s contribution to the AOS Mission is our Compact Unified Beam Ice Cloud radiometer or (GEMS-CUBIC) payload which began development in 2021. This next generation payload is designed to perform high-resolution observations of ice clouds and temperature and humidity profiles. GEMS-CUBIC is a cost effective, high performance science instrument. This data could contribute to understanding cloud formation, cloud microphysics, and precipitation processes. By measuring these atmospheric variables, GEMS-CUBIC helps assess how ice clouds scatter and absorb solar radiation, directly influencing Earth’s energy balance and climate system.

International Collaboration in Climate Science

The AOS Mission is not only a joint effort between NASA and Weather Stream but also involves significant cooperation with space agencies from around the world. Key partners include the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), the Centre National D’Etudes Spatiales (CNES), the Korean Aerospace Research Institute (KARI), and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA).
