Weather Stream Awarded NOAA Contract for Commercial Weather Data Pilot Microwave Sounder Program

Company to Provide Advanced Microwave Sounder Data Using Its GEMS Technology to Enhance Numerical Weather Prediction and Climate Modeling

Boulder, CO, September 24, 2024 — Weather Stream, a Boulder, Colorado-based pioneer in advanced satellite technology for atmospheric observation, is proud to announce that it has been awarded a contract under the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Commercial Weather Data Pilot (CWDP) Microwave Sounder (MWS) program.

Under this contract, Weather Stream will supply NOAA with high-quality passive microwave sounder observation data collected from its proprietary Global Environmental Monitoring System (GEMS) technology. The data will support NOAA’s mission to understand and predict changes in climate, weather, oceans, and coasts by enhancing numerical weather prediction (NWP), climate modeling, and disaster preparedness efforts.

“Joining forces with NOAA on the CWDP MWS program is an honor,” said Michael Hurowitz. “Our GEMS technology set a new standard in microwave sounding in 2019, and we are dedicated to providing the critical data needed to improve weather forecasting accuracy and address the challenges of climate change.”

As part of this collaboration, Weather Stream will work closely with NOAA to ensure that the GEMS data meets the specific operational requirements of the Pilot Study. The partnership will enable NOAA to evaluate the quality and impact of commercial microwave sounder observations, exploring how this data can enhance the Global Observing System and contribute to more accurate and reliable weather forecasting and climate research.

About the NOAA CWDP MWS Program

The CWDP MWS program is an initiative by NOAA’s National Environmental Satellite, Data, and Information Service (NESDIS) Commercial Data Program (CDP). The program aims to assess the viability of assimilating commercially provided satellite data into NOAA’s operational systems. Specifically, the Pilot Study will evaluate the quality and impact of commercial microwave sounder observations to determine their utility in enhancing the Global Observing System (GOS) and addressing the potential benefits of adding multiple microwave sounding orbits.
